Cycling

Cycles for hire are available at the Hayfield Picnic Site, Station Road, Hayfield (Tel: 01663 746 222) situated across the main road behind the bus terminus.

The Pennine Cycle Way

The Pennine Cycle Way runs from Derby to Berwick across the Pennines, some 355 miles! The route basically follows the Pennine Bridleway. Join at Hayfield by taking Sett Valley Trail (see below). Parts of the route are suitable for regular cycles but numerous sections only suitable for mountain bikes.

The Pennine Bridleway

One hundred and twenty miles of this route, between Derbyshire and Byrness in Northumberland, is now open. Intended primarily for horses, this bridleway is really only suitable for mountain bikes.
The trail runs through Hayfield. South, it takes you across the Peaks to Rushop Edge (9.3 km); onto Peak Forest (4.5 km) and Wormhill (9.0 km). The trail southwards finishes at Middleton Top, some 58 km from Hayfield. North, it takes you through Broadbottom (11.9 km); Tintwistle (7.1 km); Carrbrook (8.4 km); and onto a 70 km circuit starting at Summit, 60 km from Hayfield.

Sett Valley Trail
Traffic free, the Sett Valley Trail runs from Hayfield to New Mills (4 km), using the old railway track that linked Hayfield to Manchester. It is suitable for family rides.

Longendale Trail
The Longendale Trail runs from the station at Hadfield (7 miles N of Hayfield through Glossop) to the entrance to the Woodhead tunnel, a distance of about 12 miles. It has fine views across the Longendale Valley and the reservoirs which fill it and over to Black Hill to the north.

Monsal Trail
There is an easy section from the start at Bakewell (20 miles SE of Hayfield) to Longstone, about 6 km ride; but, for the more adventurous, the trail continues all the way to Blackwell Mill, a few miles downstream of Buxton on the river Wye.

Manifold Trail
A stunning trail that starts at Hulme End (22 miles S of Hayfield) and follows the old Leek & Manifold Light Railway to Waterhouses. The trail is about 20 miles (round trip); allow 4 hours plus a bit more if you wish to climb up to Thor's Cave for spectacular views.

Tissington Trail
Starting from Crowdecote (about 16 miles S of Hayfield through Buxton), the trail runs all the way to Ashbourne, some 9 miles, an interesting and pretty route.

High Peak Trail
This traffic-free trail starts from Dowlow near Buxton and runs for 28 km along the old Cromford & High Peak Railway terminating at Cromford near Matlock Bath. It joins the Tissington Trail at Parsley Hay. There are many things to see: old engine houses, sidings, quarries and abundant wildlife. Dowlow is 10 miles S of Hayfield.

Upper Derwent Valley
The cycle routes around the Derwent Reservoirs (19 miles E of Hayfield off A57), the Thornhill Trail and cycle lanes to Hathersage offer safe cycling in this area. The High Peak Trail joins the Cromford Canal (which forms part of ther Heritage Way) at High Peak Junction near Cromford. The High Peak Trail provides 17.5 miles of traffic free route and links with the Tissington Trail.

Riding

Northfield Farm is situated in England's highest village, Flash. Daily rides are offered, mostly two hours duration, that take in some of Derbyshire's most spectacular countryside. Suitable for all ages and range of riding capabilities, this is a highly recommended stable. Tel 01298 22543
Flash is 15 miles S of Hayfield off A53 south of Buxton.

Fishing

The Derwent Reservoir at Ladybower This is the only water in England where you can get a day ticket to fish for true wild brown trout. The main reservoir, Ladybower, is stocked weekly and is a very popular venue.
Ladybower is 16 miles E of Hayfield. Take A625 through Castleton and Hope; turn left on A6013.

Monsal Fisheries. The Monsal Dale River is famous for its unique strain of breeding Rainbow Trout, as well as a good head of wild and stocked Brown Trout. Fly fishing only. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Tel 01629 640159.
Monsal Head is 18 miles SE of Hayfield off B6465 near Ashford.

Press Manor Lake. A series of three lakes, the top one of which is stocked with Rainbow, Brook, Brown and Tiger Trout for fly fishing only. The bottom lake is available for coarse fishing and is stocked with Bream , Small Carp , Barbel , Roach , Rudd and Orfe.
Press Manor is situated 30 miles SE of Hayfield on A632 between Matlock and Chesterfield.

Carsington Reservoir is England's ninth largest. It has won numerous awards for its facilities which include a Visitor Centre, shops, restaurants and cafés.
Carsington is 30 miles SE of Hayfield off the B5035 between Ashbourne and Wirksworth.

Races

Flagg Races
The first point-to-point race was held in Flagg in 1892. Held each Easter Tuesday, the main event for spectators is the unique Hunt Members' race starting in the village and running across natural hunting country before finishing in the racecourse proper.
Flagg is 18 miles SSE of Hayfield (A6 through Buxton; turn right onto A5720 and then left down country lane - follow signposts).

Chatsworth International Horse Trails
Held each May, this two-day event attracts support from across Great Britain.
Chatsworth is 22 miles SE of Hayfield, south of Baslow off B6012.

Pikehall Harness Race
Racing with a difference! In 1998 top-class grass Harness Racing was introduced to Pikehall and its meetings in June and July have already become major sporting events with extensive TV coverage.
Pikehall is 23 miles SE of Hayfield (take A515 from Buxton, then left onto A5012).

Hang Gliding and Paragliding

Parapente is one of the oldest established hill-launch schools and it launches from a number of hills within Peak District including Shining Tor and High Edge (near Buxton), Dale Head (near Edale) and Mam Tor (near Castleton). Tandem flights and day tasters are available. Tel 01625 610514

Rock Climbing

The Peak District is famed for its rock climbing with the rocks divided into two types: gritstone, a course-grained sandstone; and limestone.
The numerous crags suitable for climbing include: Stanage Edge; Froggatt Edge; Stoney Middleton; Horseshoe Quarry; Chee Tor; Chee Dale Crags; Gardoms Edge; The Roaches; Cratcliffe Tor; Willersley; Burbage North and South; Ravensdale; Black; and Millstone Edge. Birchens Edge is recommended for families and beginners.

Snooker

Nine Snooker and Pool tables are available at Chalkers, a snooker club in New Mills that offers free one-day membership for visitors. There is a bar serving a variety of ales and lagers and bar snacks are available.
